Flu Shot Recommendations During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Grass Lake Community Pharmacy Flu Shot Recommendations During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Flu Season is right around the corner, and with the COVID-19 pandemic still raging on, many are wondering about when they should get their seasonal flu shot.

Under normal circumstances, Grass Lake Community Pharmacy recommends getting your flu shot during October because we want to make sure our patients are covered through the end of the flu season in May. The CDC echoes this suggestion as they recommend everyone over 6-months old get a flu shot by the end of October. However, during the pandemic should we consider recommending earlier vaccinations?

August is likely still too early, as the CDC explains that “getting vaccinated early … is likely to be associated with reduced protection against the flu infection later in the flu season, particularly among older adults”. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic to consider getting vaccinated during September could be beneficial.

The CDC states that, “September and October are good times to get vaccinated. However, as long as flu viruses are circulating, vaccination should continue, even in January or later”.
